About the course

The course will provide an overview of remote sensing capabilities for air quality applications through tutorials and hands-on exercises. Training will cover the use of aerosol, trace gas and fire-related data products from satellite and ground-based instruments in air quality studies. The course will also cover how to access and interpret satellite imagery to analyze air quality during exceptional events such as forest fires and dust storms. Hands-on modules will guide students in examining post-processed CMAQ model output from selected air pollution episodes to perform one-to-one comparisons against the remotely sensed data from the OMI and MODIS instruments; operational knowledge of CMAQ is helpful but not required. Other topics will include satellite-based fire products, and web access to these data.

Students who register for this course NEED TO BRING THEIR OWN LAPTOPS. All software used in the course is freely available and can be downloaded prior to the start of the course. More information about what software should be installed will be communicated to registrants prior to the start of the class.

Prerequisites

A basic knowledge of air quality modeling and atmospheric chemistry concepts is essential for getting the most out of this course. In this course, concepts of remote sensing processing terminology, and calculation of remote sensing products from air quality model outputs are reviewed, but prior knowledge of such concepts is helpful.
