External Advisory Committee (EAC)

The EAC's role is to guide CMAS's management and technical coordinators to meet the needs of the community. It will act on behalf of the community to define needs and priorities, advise on changing requirements, set research and development agendas, review activity progress, and make recommendations for the advancement of Models-3 science and software improvements. The EAC will assist in developing a network of contacts by identifying users and other air quality programs.

The EAC was structured to represent a cross-section of the modeling community. To maintain enthusiasm and have an influx of new ideas, 3 of the 12 members will rotate off the committee every six months after they have served two years.

EAC Organization and Meetings

The EAC will meet monthly over the phone and Internet with the CMAS director conducting the meetings. Whenever possible, face-to-face working sessions will be conducted in conjunction with other meetings or conferences such as AWMA, to reduce travel costs. CMAS will be responsible for convening the advisory committee at its yearly Models-3 User's conference.

EAC Duties

Some of the decisions that the EAC will be required to make in the first year include:

  • The structure of the EAC.
  • A process for intellectual property of participants to be protected. CMAS' goal is for cooperation and sharing; all model codes will be publicly available and open source. To encourage sharing, proper credit for contribution must be recognized. Of particular note is the protection of research property while normal publishing procedures run their course.
  • Define the objectives, needs, and priorities for other CMAS functions
